AND: I don’t allow advertisements, or I would be inundated with them and lose people’s confidences. Press releases are rewritten to turn it into news. The longer my newsletter gets the more the spam filters pick up key or code words and block it. People simply want nouns (news), and not adjectives or adverbs that enhance the news and add unnecessary length.
AND: “Oops, I Did It Again,” is a jazzy, swing-era style song that I like, but in this case, it means I failed to BCC or blind carbon copy one of the newsletters. I was looking RIGHT at it when I sent it, but I couldn’t see my mistake at the time. Wonder if any of the other writers and editors on the newsletter has done the “Oops, I Did It Again” error? Of course, the song was sung by a beautiful young lady and that’s much easier to forgive.

AND: William A. “Bill” Bader Sr, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away June 26, 2022, in Riggins, Idaho, on the family property. He was born June 22, 1943. He is survived by his wife, Debbie; son, Bill Jr (wife Jayme); daughters, Kelly, Bobbie, and Lisa; and grandchildren, Evan, Garret, Mandy, Nathan, Kaiden, and Jade. A celebration of life tribute will be at Summit Motorsports Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to God Speed Ministries at www.godspeedministry.com or Racers for Christ at www.teamrfc.org.
AND: “Bill Bader Sr owned a 3300-acre place in Riggins, Idaho. He and two neighbors were cutting back the weeds on tractors. The two guys in front were the cutters, Bader was riding behind them, raking up the cuttings. When the guys in front turned around to see where he was, he was gone. He and his Kobuta went over a 100-foot cliff. There were about 300 people at the church. The only racers I saw there were John Force, Mark Pawuk, Clay Millican and Jim Head. There could have been others, but I didn’t see them. There are between 2000 and 2500 at the track. It was very nicely done. I was invited to the private family graveside service as well. Including family there were no more than 30 of us graveside. When Bill turned the track over to his son he stopped coming out for the national event or the Night Under Fire because he wanted the attention to be on his son, and not himself. He and his wife, Debbie, were almost always in Norwalk, Ohio during those events, so we’d get together for breakfast on Monday morning after the races. Yes, we talked about what had gone on at the track, but our conversations were usually much more general in topic.” Jon Asher

AND: “I met him when I was 14 years old. Their family then lived about 10 houses up the street from my family then. Whenever I went over to Bader’s house, His mom, Josephine, would say to me, wouldn’t you rather be in my house making cookies instead of outside with all those cars outside that were being built up by friends of Bill’s to get ready to be raced. He always told me, that someday, he would own a racetrack. And sure enough, he did it. His Mom was a beautiful person and his brother, Joe was a great guy. His Dad passed away at very young age. Washington state drag racing legend Walt Austin passed away Monday, September 18, 2024. He was 84. Walt took over his father’s business, Walt’s Radiator, at a young age after his father passed away unexpectedly. He grew the business into the hugely successful Walt’s Radiator, Muffler, and Brakes with 34 retail locations in Washington and 12 wholesale warehouses across the country. Walt was an incredible entrepreneur and businessman. As the founder of Walt Austin Racing, he accumulated 78 NHRA national event wins and hundreds of NHRA Divisional wins with sons Pat and Mike and four Top Alcohol Funny Car world championships with Pat, and then had a huge hand in helping his grandson, Drew, win championships and race in NHRA’s Hot Rod Heritage Series. Austin was well known for many of his technological advances in the sport, including the nitro Ford engine that powers Drew today. Austin will be inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame next March. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sharon, and his three children, Debi Hoberg (husband Pete), Mike Austin, and Pat Austin (wife Keila), 6 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren with two more on the way and by siblings Dee, Jan, and Dennis (wife Bucky). https://www.nhra.com/news/2023/memoriam.

AND:Longtime NHRA Sportsman racing standout Danny Townsend died September 28, 2023, of heart failure. He was 73. Townsend won seven Division 3 championships, the first in Comp in 1984 and then the following six in Top Alcohol Funny Car, including a string of four years straight from 1986-1989. Townsend collected nine national event wins, five in Comp and four in Top Alcohol Funny Car, Townsend’s racing career ended following a devastating crash in 2006 in the final round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at National Trail Raceway not long after his final win in Bradenton, Fla, earlier that season. https://www.nhra.com/news/2023/memoriam.
3) Richard, you are really taxing my 95-year-old brain, it’s been almost 60 years ago for that event. I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast, and it’s not even lunch time. Just kidding. I had my usual oatmeal, so I don’t forget. I know it was a big decision that NHRA and your dad had to make. CHIC: Sixty years ago, would be 1964 which was the end of the “Fuel Ban” in the NHRA. Side note: it wasn’t a full fuel ban as the NHRA turned a blind eye to NHRA tracks that had to use fuel to survive the competition.

5)Oscar Koveleski, a driver for Jack Deren’s race cars: written by Martin Rudow.
Oscar was born on November 29, 1932, in Moosic, Pennsylvania and was named Anthony Michael “Oscar” Koveleski. He was bitten by the racing bug at a young age, joining the Philadelphia Region of the SCCA at 18. His first win came while driving an MGTC in a 1951 SCCA Regional race at Bone Stadium in Pittston, Pennsylvania. He raced off and on throughout the 1950’s and ’60’s in SCCA Regional and National Races, as well as the 12 hours of Sebring (Ford GT-40) and the 24 hours of Daytona (Shelby Cobra). For a few years he campaigned a distinctive Ferrari 857S-Chevy that was later acquired by no less a personage than Andy Warhol. His Can-Am Car, the #54 orange McLaren, was a welcome fixture in his Can-Am years, 1969 through 1972. (to be continued)

8) John Hunt of the British Drag Racing Historians Association wrote in about their group. Gerry Belton’s involvement in organising the 1964 Drag Festivals – Part 1. Gerry had a stand at the 1964 Racing Car Show in January featuring an Allard Dragondragster which created a lot of interest and useful contacts for the Drag Festivals. The British Drag Racing Association (BDRA) was formed, and practice days were organised. Different venues around the country were looked at as possibilities for the Drag Festival and the RAC were contacted about exempting the American participants from some of their strict regulations. 9) I enjoy reading what you already post. I don’t follow motorsports much at all, I used to follow NASCAR a bit but not much anymore. Our landlord is Don Garlits now, so I’ve been looking into and learning about his journey. Anything that is motorsports related is interesting to me! But I do find the journey of people within the sport to always be neat – Like a ‘how did you end up where you are today?’ type of question. 10) BLAST FROM THE PAST…… From the Wally & Barbara Parks story, We Did It Our Way.21 AUGUST 1938 Rajo Jack
Here is an amusing story that my father recalls. “Not too many people are still around who can honestly say, ‘I raced Rajo Jack,’ but I can. Back in the 1930’s my cousin (Jack Parks) and I had put together a Model-T Ford roadster to enter an anything-goes ’jalopy race’ at old Southern Ascot Speedway in Southgate, California. Vehicle type wasn’t important, but we replaced our Model-T steering gear with one from an early Dodge. And for better traction, we installed a pair of junkyard 1929 Model-A wire wheels on the back. To adapt them to the axle ends, some genius had brazed the wheels onto the Model-T brake drums, but that was of little concern to us. We also had removed the exhaust muffler and replaced the stock ignition with a distributor of some kind that someone had given to us. And we drove the car out to the racetrack.
11) Executive Committee member for the Engine Builders Hall of Fame is Billy Godbold. Billy was the Comp Cams Valvetrain Engineering manager and is one of the many reasons Comp Cams became the name in high-performance camshafts and valvetrains. Today Godbold runs Godbold Engineering, based in Lakeland, Tennessee. Godbold Engineering is a motorsports engineering firm that uses applied physics, metallurgy, testing, and surface engineering to solve complex problems in motorsports.
12) One of the oldest car shows in Southern California will display the hottest cars and trucks on the streets of Olde Downtown La Verne, CA. The show attracts about 600 show vehicles and 10,000-12,000 spectators. All types of racecars are also invited to sign up and give your sponsors great exposure. ANSWER: I received dozens and dozens of firsthand documents and wrote the story in my father’s history (Wally Parks). The fuel ban was totally justified and was a decision of only one man, my father. At the time I disagreed heatedly with it, but after reading many documents and especially the insurance docs, there was no other recourse left to me but to conclude that fuel should never have been allowed in any drag racing league. In discussing this subject with people, I find it impossible to convince them. It amuses me no end to watch them squabble endlessly over the ban. Dad should never have apologized for being right. Now watch all the angry rebuttals come in.

Steve was still very much in the business of officiating at the drag races and gives much of the credit for the reunion’s success to the late John Zenda, and also the other NHRA staff members who volunteered their efforts. At the time, only one Hot Rod Reunion was planned. Steve never thought it would take on a life of its own. Yet NHRA held its 25th California Hot Rod Reunion at Famoso Dragstrip in 2016, bringing a whole new generation of drag racing fans to watch the same one- and two-engine dragsters, roadsters, and gassers that attracted a young Steve Gibbs. (caption) Steve Gibbs (center), with pals Mike Dody (left) and Jim Catlyn (right). The trio went to Bonneville in 1959 to watch Mickey Thompson race his Challenger. “We went through high school together,” Steve said. “Mike was the best man at our wedding, and Jim was an usher. Jim later worked for me at NHRA.” The photo below shows Mike making some last-minute checks in front of Steve’s folk’s house in Baldwin Park before heading to Bonneville in 1959. While the Ford looks great here, it was a rolling wreck when it returned.

American Rodding magazine ran a competition in their first magazine to fly the winners to the Festival as well as a stay at the London Hilton. Not only that but they were planning to have over 2000 trucks throughout America with posters on their sides talking about the Drag Festival in London, England, and they asked Gerry to get Sydney Allard to give them one of his Dragsters in kit form to give away free in their next magazine contest! Drag Racing’s Warren “The Professor” Johnson, the cars, people & wins behind his Pro Stock Success is a paperback book printed on high quality, glossy paper which brings out the good, to very good caliber of the photographs. The book has 176 pages, with a fine cover and back plate, with a glued binding, containing around 340 color and 45 black and white photographs. The size is 8 1/2 x11 inches, and also contains 34 “lessons” or adages that WJ and KJ live by. There are about 20 graphs that show the number of victories, starts, championships and other statistics and the photographs and graphs are fully captioned. There is no index, but a capable Table of Contents, Introduction, Acknowledgment, Dedication, 13 chapters and an Appendix. The Publisher is CarTech, located at 6118 Main Street, North Branch, Minnesota 55056. The author resides in Southern California and covers drag racing and is the owner of WinLight Communications. EDITOR: Cough, cough, sputter, cough, cough, I am still spitting up phlegm from reading Drag News even though it is through an email. Why couldn’t Drag News use decent paper like the National Dragster, which doesn’t turn to dust 70 years later? You don’t have to make the news so large; took me ten minutes just to scan the article. How can I not give credit to the Bean Bandits and Emery Cook down in San Diego even though the fuel banner was Wally Parks. You know the story; I sent you the history. Keep up the good work and tell Volcano, your email server, to stop erupting at me when I send you lengthy newsletters.
DWJ replies: MAYBE BECAUSE … those poor NHRA members were paying the freight for Dad’s fancy paper? Actually, first 10 or so issues (1955) of Drag News were printed on coated, glossy, magazine-weight stock before switching to quarter-fold newsprint. When I worked for Doris Herbert (editor and publisher 1975-77), she’d worked out a deal with Orange County’s weekly Pennysaver to use the Drag News run as the printer’s “tuneup” for that week’s shopper rag, printing just ahead of the kajillion-circulation Pennysaver. Both titles were B&W inside, plus one basic color of “spot color” on the cover sheet (only) that was always the same that week. In so doing, Doris reportedly paid ONLY for the stock; NOTHING for the print job! Besides, ever’buddy knew that fancy National Wally wuz nuthin’ but fibs & political omissions—right? Love you, Brother.

EDITOR: In the Wally & Barbara Parks Story; We Did It Our Way, there was a dispute between the NHRA and members representing the city over the ownership of the 1955 US NATIONALS title race and brand run at the Great Bend, Kansas airport. The “rebels” (choose either side) claimed to “own” the event, with NHRA choosing to take “its” race to Kansas City in 1956, and the local group keeping “its US NATIONALS” at Great Bend in the future. The AHRA stepped in to run the race for the local group.

Allen Friedrich who lived in England and was a British editor of the American Motor Sports Illustrated was looking to do a feature on the Drag Festivals. Southern Television wanted to feature the series on their programs ‘Here and Now’ and ‘Day by Day’ and the BBC were also interested. American Rodding magazine ran a competition in their first magazine to fly the winners to the Festival, as well as a stay at the London Hilton. Not only that but they were planning to have over 2000 trucks throughout America with posters on their sides talking about the Drag Festival in London, England, and they asked Gerry to get Sydney Allard to give them one of his Dragsters in kit form to give away free in their next magazine contest! 33) DragWorld Friday, April 30, 1965 “NHRA/Parks warns Pete Millar.” Los Angeles – “The National Hot Rod Association and its president, Wally Parks, have served notice on publisher/cartoonist Pete Millar that a lawsuit is forthcoming if Millar ‘oversteps the bounds of propriety’ in his Drag Cartoons magazine.
Attorneys (including his friend Bob Gottlieb-editor) representing NHRA and Mr Parks contend that Millar has ’caused damage and financial loss … by overstepping the bounds of propriety in the field of libel and satire.’ They cite the May 1965 issue of the magazine and claim that Parks is depicted as ‘Waldo’ and other NHRA employees as being ‘dishonest, inefficient, and lacking in morals and integrity.‘” (sent in by Dave Wallace Jr, to be continued in next issue)

Andy Willsheer: “I first saw Drag Racing at Santa Pod 1972 which came about knowing the name Brian Chapman. One of my first cars I saw run was the unusual looking Bond Bug called ‘Metronome’. I very quickly realised that to be nearest to the racing I needed a camera and track pass. Within one year I discovered it was quite different in the USA. So 1973 went to California with my brother for 3 months, ending up staying for 1 year and 3 months and had a brilliant time. 39) Bob Riley, known for his design, creation and construction of championship-winning race cars, was honored by the Road Racing Drivers Club with the 2023 PHIL HILL Award. The 2019 recipient, RRDC President Bobby Rahal, made the presentation at the annual RRDC members’ dinner on January 24 prior to the 62nd running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the season opener of the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The PHIL HILL Award has been presented annually since 1993 to the person who the RRDC feels has rendered outstanding service to road racing. The recipient may be a driver, entrant or outstanding member of a sanctioning body. It is named in honor of America’s first Formula 1 World Champion (in 1961) and is not only a tribute to his masterful accomplishments on the racetrack, but it also recognizes his contributions as a great ambassador for the sport. Selected by members of the RRDC each year since 1971, the award recognizes the driver exhibiting the most outstanding performance at the annual Sports Car Club of America National Championship Runoffs in terms of personal spirit and skill behind the wheel. Originally called the “Outstanding Performance Award,” the honor was later named after Mark Donohue, a former SCCA Champion, an inductee in the SCCA Hall of Fame and past president of the RRDC, following his death in 1975. 43) My name is Matt Benoit. I’m a writer and journalist from Bellingham, Washington. I’m putting together a historical article about our city’s lost drag strip, which existed from 1953 to about 1958, in terms of drag racing usage. Wally Parks visited the drag strip in mid-August of 1953 to speak and dedicate the strip. He also wrote a fun article about it in the July 1954 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. I’m wondering if you have any additional information or details about his journey here among his photos or ephemera. Let me know if you might. Even if you don’t, I was hoping you might answer one question for me, to be quoted on in the article: In the early days of the NHRA, did your dad frequently make such trips to dedicate drag strips and “spread the gospel,” so to speak, of how organized drag racing would deter street racing? I’ve been an NHRA fan since I was 5. Am almost 35 now. Been attending the NW Nationals event in Seattle area since childhood, with just a handful of missed years. Always love a day at the racetrack! MATT: Check the internet for Bangshift, 1320 Standard club and other sites where people may remember the drag strip. Yes, he often traveled and visited car clubs and drag racing sites. He also sent out the Drag Safaris of 1954-55, and the Safety Safari of 1956. The last remaining member of the Safaris is Chic Cannon who is now 95. The best way to piece together the history of Bellingham is to place as many notices as you can on websites, newspapers, etc. The car clubs and officials are probably all gone by now, but with a bit of good kismet you may be able to reach some volunteers and 2nd generation racers and spectators who were present.

47) Ken Breslauer’s “Sebring 1983: The Warhorse and the Hitchhiker” chronicles one of the greatest upsets in
endurance racing history. After 23 lead changes among eight cars, a well-worn GTO class Porsche 934 that was 11 laps behind at one point ended up winning the race. When driver and car owner Wayne Baker crossed the finish line, he didn’t even know he had won overall. Co-drivers Jim Mullen and Kees Nierop drove brilliantly but Baker’s road-to-victory was nearly derailed during his final stint in the dark when a hitchhiker suddenly appeared on the racing circuit. JANUARY 1937 Road Runners car club is formed. My father wrote, “Among the founding clubs of the SCTA was one called the Road Runners, of which I was an original member. I suggested the name, designed the club’s logo and hand-painted the metal plaques that were standard identity on the backs of members’ cars. Though I wasn’t one of the pillars in SCTA’s formation, I attended the early meetings along with my Road Runner friends, Jack Henry and Jack Harvey, fascinated by the sincerity and determination that was so evident among members of the car clubs that were represented.

Chris Dossett:“At the time there were not many sites devoted to UK Drag Racing History, and many people took the initiative and began emailing with material to add to the site. Among the earliest contributors were Tog from Eurodragster and Bob Jarrett, crew chief of the Showtime Funny Car. After much correspondence, I met him at Santa Pod a month after the website was launched. This led to an enjoyable five year stint working as part of the Showtime crew. During this period I got to meet many of the people who regularly sent me material for the site, many of whom I am still in touch with. The site grew rapidly until my own work and family commitments took over and I had to let it stand dormant for more years than I really wanted to. During this time, I still attended occasional meetings and, in 2012, I spent a year working on the Super Modified Corvette of my mate Nigel Payne, who I had met when he came to work on the Showtime crew for a couple of seasons. 55) “Edsel B. Ford II is really deserving of this award for everything he has done for racing,” said legendary racer and inaugural 1989 MSHFA Hall of Famer A.J. Foyt. “I’ve known Edsel since he was a kid – I snuck him into the pits at Indy when he wasn’t old enough to be there. He grew up with racing and his support for our sport has been outstanding on and off the track. Some of my best wins came as part of the Ford family. I won the ’72 Daytona 500 with the Wood Brothers. And I was lucky enough to win the Indy 500 with Ford in 1967, and two weeks later, Dan Gurney (MSHFA Class of 1991) and I won Le Mans in the GT40.
