Edelbrock Partners with SICK the Magazine for Unique SICK 66 Drag-And-Drive Event
A 1300-mile, Route 66-inspired drag-and-drive event will thunder across the United States in one week’s time when Edelbrock Sick 66 takes almost 300 racers and cruisers on a drag racing journey through America.
Following in the footsteps of last year’s Death Week, Edelbrock Sick 66 is a one-time-only event designed to give America’s toughest street cars not just tremendous racing opportunities but also a driving experience unlike any other.
Sick The Magazine publisher and six-times Drag Week winner Tom Bailey said where most drag-and-drive events start with finding tracks and then filling in the gaps for the routes, Edelbrock Sick 66 began by setting an awesome drive and then searching for venues to suit.
“Every real car guy or girl has always dreamed of cruising along Route 66,” he said. “To be able to do that in cars with thousands of horsepower, capable of eight-second quarter-mile times, is going to be something else.”
Edelbrock Sick 66 begins at Ozark Raceway Park on October 10 and 11 with testing and day one of competition, before moving on to Mo-Kan Dragway (October 12), Tulsa Raceway Park (October 13), Amarillo Dragway (October 15), Albuquerque Dragway (October 17) and Alien City Dragway (October 18). Racing will begin at 9am each day, with the exception of Alien City Dragway starting at 12pm.
Drag-and-drive events feature the quickest street legal cars in the country testing their capabilities not just at the track but also on the highways. Each entrant is required to drive their car between the six venues for Edelbrock Sick 66, with no haulers or outside support allowed. The winner is the competitor with the lowest average time across the six tracks. Each competitor is required to visit checkpoints along the way, an area Edelbrock Sick 66 has taken to new levels.
“We’re going to be visiting everything from a Superman-themed ice cream shop to the birthplace of America’s nuclear weapons program,” Bailey said. “Ghost towns, retro museums, old gas stations, there’s so much to see on Route 66 and they’re going to look extra awesome with a bunch of drag cars rolling past.”
Competition is expected to be tight at the top. Last year’s Death Week champion Jason Rousseau will return in his Malibu, but he will face stiff opposition from the likes of Rick Steinke’s turbocharged Chevelle Malibu and Lamar Swindoll’s nitrous big-block Camaro. They will be joined by some well-known faces in unusual rides, such as engine builder Steve Morris in a turbocharged 2006 Chevy Trailblazer.
“The variety of cars that spectators get to see is the best part of Edelbrock Sick 66,” Bailey said. “There’s some really fast street cars and the best part is that people can watch them on the track and then follow us along the highways to some of the checkpoints too. I recommend getting to the track early, watching some of the hitters, walking the pits and then drive with us for a few miles.”
