Motorsports Newsletter 12/30/23

By Richard Parks

EDITOR’S BAG: Have a Safe and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. The Editor.
Please don’t take me off the newsletter list. Anon
READERS: I only put this notice up for those who DON’T want the newsletter so that they can inform me to take their names off the list. This never applies to those who want the newsletter. Fear not, the newsletter is coming to you every week (or so).
If you have a favorite car show, museum, place to meet let me know and I’ll put it in the newsletter. I haven’t heard from the NHRA Motorsports Museum and the Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum about their activities. WHY?
A question was raised as to how the editor places content. There is no secret; what comes in first goes in first as it is the laziest way for a lazy editor to achieve.

1) Paula Murphy passes, written by Anne Proffit anne.proffit. This third week of December has not been kind to the motorsports community. On the 20th of this month, Don Schumacher passed. A day later we lost the “Fastest Woman on Wheels,” whose drag racing and land-speed record exploits enabled all who came after her in the sport. Paula Murphy, the first woman licensed to race a Funny Car, died on December 21. She was 95 years old. Known as Miss STP for the company’s sponsorship she earned, Murphy started drag racing in 1964 when the sport was in its nascent period. Her Olds 442, entered by the Los Angeles and Orange County Dealers Association, had prep from Mopar legend Dick Landy; she raced that Oldsmobile for a couple of years in the Stock Eliminator class. For the rest of the article go to Racing
Junk.com, rjnewsletter and Hal Canode. Support. Motorhead Media, 909 North Pacific Coast Highway, El Segundo, CA, 90245.
AND THIS:
Paula Murphy. Lost in the holiday noise. Truly a brave, notable and memorable racer. She made her mark in sports cars, then fuel dragsters, then records in a jet Bonneville car. Though not allowed in competition, set competitive times in NASCAR and Indy racers, including a Novi and a turbine car. See https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/26/sports/auto
racing/paula-murphy-dead.html. Sent in by Bob Storck
AND MORE:
Della Woods called and notified me of Paula Murphy’s passing. Della has many fond memories of Paula and her place in motorsports.

2) My painting is too new, so I haven’t put it on my website yet. If anyone is interested in seeing it, please email me and I’ll send you the pictures. Paul Chamberlain 2604prc.
READERS: Paul’s subjects are varied but he also paints hot rods. Another great hot rod artist is Tom Fritz.

3) Steve Gibbs, written by Dick Martin 2016. SERIALIZED for the Motorsports Newsletter.

The who’s who of Funny Car teams converged on Fremont in late October 1968 for a huge weekend of racing, only to find the promoter who had hired Steve had a run-in with the money people and split, leaving Steve holding the bag—with little cash in it. The promised appearance money wasn’t there to give to the teams, which left Steve to evenly dole out what cash there was. He also informed them he was out of a job. Worse yet, the meet was hit with rain, meaning very little more money would be forthcoming. That evening Steve got a phone call from Jim “Jungle Jim” Liberman, asking him to meet with the racers. Steve expected an earful, but the opposite was true. The racers knew when Steve was at Irwindale, he was a straight shooter and knew he had nothing to do with the disaster. They pooled their money and handed Steve several thousand dollars to pick up the pieces and make his way back to the San Gabriel Valley.

Dick Martin can be reached through Gone Racin’ at RnParks1. To see the captioned photographs go to https://www.motortrend.com/staff/dick-martin/.

4) Those we lost this year included Reeves Callaway. Famous for his high-performance Corvettes featuring power, handling and style. Fred Marik who had a marketing/consulting company with clients ranging from Bell Helmets, Penske Racing, Dow Chemical, Sunoco, Sears Roebuck and NASCAR also passed away. Shoichiro Toyoda, the former Toyota Motor Corp president who led the company his father founded into US auto manufacturing died at the age of 97. Sabine Schmitz, The Queen of the Nürburgring, lost her battle with cancer. John Dinkel eleven.tenths.

5) John Hunt of the British Drag Racing Historians Association wrote in about their group. Here are some of the articles that they have on file for UK drag racers. TAD 1997 to Super Pro 2007 (published 7th February 2022). NFAA 2007 onwards (published 14th February 2022). Quotes from Adam Gleadow: “It’s been an honour to be involved in the process and help out the family story for people to enjoy.”Part 3 of 7 of the Gleadow Family. In the mid-1980’s, the Gleadow brothers moved on to running a Ford 23T altered with their Rover V8, the body and chassis of which having origins from other UK racers. They combined forces with Steve Clarke, latterly of Nimbus Motorsports, the altered running quicker with his expertise. As a result, the team got sponsorship, making the trip to Hockenheim in 1989. The team progressed to their Time Machine Econo Funny Car in the early 1990s, for two years latterly running a Top Alcohol Dragster in the highly competitive Top Alcohol Championship with guidance from Dave Wilson. http://www.eurodragster.com/news/features/blogs/gleadows_pt

6) I believe Bruce Geisler passed away a few years back just after moving from Huntington Beach to Washington. He was a great friend and helped us at Bonneville. Dave Macdonald
DAVE: I met with Bruce in HB to gather info for a story, and he showed me his workshop, photos, and the collectibles he had accumulated in a lifetime of racing. It was a museum, and I enjoyed every minute Bruce spent with me. What a delight to be invited into people’s garages and dens. Museums are everywhere; all that people have to do is LOOK and ASK.

7) A premier lineup of companies as influential in past and present-day motorsports as the accomplished Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA) 2024 Induction Class has stepped up to support next year’s honorees as official sponsors of the 2024 MSHFA Induction Celebration presented by Toyota Racing, March 11 – 12, 2024. The 36th class to be inducted into the MSHFA in 2024 includes: Austin Coil (Drag Racing), Scott Dixon (Open Wheel), Earl B. Gilmore (Historic), Jim Downing & Dr Robert Hubbard (Technology), Bud Ekins (Motorcycles), Jimmie Johnson (Stock Cars), Paul Newman (At Large), John Surtees (Sports Cars) and Phil Walters, aka “Ted Tappett” (Historic). For more information on additional sponsorship opportunities or to purchase tickets, visit the MSHFA at glevy. From: Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Adam Saal saalgoodpr.

8) My wife and I are looking for partners to launch a new Cracker Barrel style of restaurant called “Build It.” But instead of Cracker Barrel’s style of retail store we want the retail store to have buildable toys and be a hobby shop for young boys and girls. I have a plan that is revolutionary on how to make it get to a McDonalds (location level) of 38,000 locations using modern tech/digital arts in a new way. We are working to try and team with my friend Carson Smith from Speedway Motors. Here is the 4-minute video on it. wefilm1.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtdHRDrgSnc.

13) BLAST FROM THE PAST…… From the TheWally & Barbara Parks story, We Did It Our Way. Wallace “Wally” Gordon Parks was born on January 21st, or perhaps the 22nd and if you wish it could be the 23rd. He chose the 23rd as it made him feel younger. There was a blizzard, the doctor was late, midwives were called, and the doctor couldn’t make it back to his office until the 23rd or 24th. My grandfather told my mother it was the 21st, the Army accepted the 22nd date and the doctor may have written the date he finally survived the blizzard and reached his office to record the birth.

14) AND more Season’s greetings and Holiday wishes:

18) “The Lake Perkolilli Red Dust Revival had its moment in the sun at the glitzy ballroom of the Dorchester Hotel in London this month. The great and good of the old car movement in the United Kingdom gathered for the annual Octane Historic Motoring Awards and with the Red Dust Revival recognised as a finalist in the awards, representatives were invited (at their own cost) to attend the prize giving. Now, it would be hard to justify flying to London from WA just to attend a slap-up dinner but as Graeme and Cathy Coks were already nearby in Amsterdam for the launch of his book about the Duyfken replica sailing ship (entitled Through Darkest Seas for anyone who would like to purchase an excellent Christmas present), then they accepted the invitation.” The full story is told in the December issue of Vintage Metal Magazine. 19) You could spend hours looking at hot rod hot line! Mark Hampton

22) Royce Rumsey just published “Dutch Treat” at roycer924_2.

23) Rosco McGlashan, from Aussie Invader at rosco. December 2023 newsletter for Australia’s World Land Speed Record Challenger. 2023 started with a bang, and the massive logistical task of appearing at the Avalon International Airshow. The show went on for 10 days, with some 400,000 people in attendance. This had been rescheduled due to COVID. We were invited to appear, and it took a lot of work to make this appearance happen. Moving our 16 metre (52 foot) long beast, crew and equipment, some 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles) round trip, took a lot of planning, money and time. This could not have been achieved without some great support from many sponsors, including Aries Rail, Di Candilo Steel City, Advanced Electrical Equipment and the incredible support and sponsorship of Heather Jones and the Pilbara Heavy Haulage Girls Group. There were many others that also contributed to get us there, and we thank them all. AussieInvader5R, 6 Karalundie Way, Mullaloo, Western Australia 6027, Australia.

24) The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America is unique in that it honors all forms of motorsports. Located on the grounds of Daytona International Speedway, “The World Center of Racing,” the MSHFA greets close to 150,000 guests each year to its museum and reaches millions more online. “This is the place important racing memorabilia belongs,” George Levy says. “This is the place where it will be seen, appreciated and inspire current and future generations. This is the place where their stories, legacy as a benefactor, can be shared forever.” Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, saalgoodpr.www.granprixplis.com). Craig Breedlove, Ken Warby,Mike Cook Sr. All very special and much-missed characters with whom I was blessed to have friendships, and who enriched our lives.
Happy Christmas to you and your family, and please keep up the good work in 2024! David Tremayne
DAVID: I worked on Craig’s 1997 security team at Black Rock Desert and Mike was a long-time friend of the family. I wrote to Ken in Australia. These are all great men, and we will definitely feel their loss.

27)Wishing you a very Happy Holiday Season, a warm family Christmas, and a healthy and GREAT 2024. I helped with some Oscar Koveleski information and worked for him while attending college and kept in touch with him regularly until the end. I am a former NHRA member and racer and quite active more locally and regionally from the late 1960’s until 1986. Mostly E, F, and G modified cars and my last cars were a B/SR and finally a D/ED. I am still a rabid car enthusiast and currently judge at a number of Concours (Pebble for 20 years, Amelia for 26, Hilton for 20) and a number of others. I have been Chief Judge or Honorary Chief judge 83 times over the past 30 years. I am an Automotive Historian, and collector plus involved with many clubs. Paul Sable docsable1
READERS: The Oscar Koveleski story is available free by email on Word Doc just let me know and I will send it to you as an attachment. I also have another 500 stories on people and events if you are interested. Doc Sable is working on a book of custom cars. Can you help him? Write to Doc and encourage him to write his own bio and stories.

DALE: Thank you and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.

32) Clive Rooms also has a well detailed library of event programmes some of which date back to the 1900s. If you have
photos taken at some of these venues then why not add them to the page. Same goes for programme covers and there inside page content, promotional leaflets, magazine and newspaper articles, tickets, stickers, club badges or just general articles of interest will be of benefit to this page. As we start to get more in-depth, I want to start photographic albums for the venues so that we can make the page into a valuable reference source of information that everyone can contribute. This
page is solely dedicated to venues which have played a role in the growth of our sport. After all they are all considered to be UK Drag Strips that time has indeed forgotten! From: Jeremy Cookson at quartermilenews.

33) Alex Berg Racing, abjr. Berg Brigade, I need your help. I have plans to race in Europe next year, more information will be shared in my next newsletter. Having said that, I am working on securing the financial support I need for my 2024 campaign. Several of my current supporters/partners have already committed to working with me next year. But I still have a way to go to secure the complete budget I need. I try to raise my funding through Business-to-Business Projects, and I have various that are in the works now, but I cannot rely on them until the funding is secured for 2024. I have several investment opportunities for individuals and companies to return on investment and benefit for investing in my program. If anyone reading this has any interest or ideas to help/invest into my program, please reach out. Thank you, everyone, for your support. It has been an incredible 2023 season. From: Doug Stokes (stokes28doug.

34) Our Canadian brothers brought an outstanding array of amazing, fast, and competitive cars to run over the American teams, like Spencer Hyde, winner of the $100,000 World Series, Kenny Lang of NHRA fame, Al Martorino, Jay Santos, the Smokies Garage team, which is a killer fast car and many more. As our alliance grows, we expect even bigger, faster fields and events. In my opinion, Empire Dragway is one of the top ten tracks in the country, with a great, smooth surface, the longest shutdown, super track prep and warm, hospitable staff. The NEOPMA and PMRA agree that this is one of our favourite facilities. From Bruce Mehlenbacher at Bruce.
READERS: Empire Dragway and Association have a long history in drag racing which goes back to the days of the NHRA Safety Safari and is detailed in the work TheWally & Barbara Parks story, We Did It Our Way.

37) The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA) will honor New York City native Philip F. Walters (1916–2000) who began his career with a ruse. Wanting to break into racing at 22 but short of funds and experience, he bought a helmet and roamed the paddock at local midget tracks where he claimed he was fictitious West Coast star “Ted Tappett.” It worked. He got a ride and started winning immediately. At one point in 1940 he won 26 of 35 features. The following year he scored 21 firsts, 16 seconds and four thirds. One of his biggest fans was a young New York teenager named Dan Gurney, a member of the MSFHA’s Class of 1991. From Adam Saal at SaalGoodPR, 321-890-2848.

41) Jim McFarland tribute, written by Dave Wallace Jr for Hot Rod Magazine. SERIALIZED

HRM] Which of your careers has been the most satisfying?

JM] I don’t know if I can rank them. I can walk around something and look at it so many ways, based on experience. That’s just nothing but good fortune. I can see something from the perspectives of a racer, an engineer, a media guy, a regulator, an administrator. As I was thrust into those different situations, I tried to learn everything I could every time the environment changed. I’m still trying to do that.

42) EDITOR:The following is serialized. “Many of the members of the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame and those in attendance tonight would not be where they are, had it not been for our father Bruce A. Mehlenbacher and our grandfather L.B. Mehlenbacher. 48) A proposal to America: From a survey there appears to be SIX schools in a normal high school district, plus three or more adult or continuation schools for various reasons. I propose a new vision for our American school system in which grades 1-8 teach the basic Liberal Arts plus the 3-R’s (reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic), basic psychology, English skills, history, etc. I propose that High Schools change their curriculum to vocational, engineering, science, technology, laboratory and minor research along with job skills, and remedial Liberal Arts. Most students will not attend college, nor does it benefit them skillwise in most situations. College is expensive and wastes valuable time if all that it does is work on remedial skills best taught in lower grades. College is needed, but not for remedial work that should be done in High School or a continuation of Liberal Arts. Contact me for a list of some job skills listed on the internet that I have researched. Editor

56) November 5, 2023– Results of the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Daytona presented by IMSA 24 Hour at Daytona International Raceway. Car owner Gregory and his co-drivers Randy Buck and Ethan Shippert have combined for a record seven HSR Classics victories over the years and came into this weekend’s 24 hour riding a three-race win streak dating back to last year’s Classic Daytona. The bid for another race win and a battle with the Pantera was cut short, however, when a rear suspension component on the Chevron failed in the second Group B race Saturday night with Shippert at the wheel. At full speed on NASCAR Turn 4, the Chevron was sent into the wall and then flipped and skidded on its roll bar before coming to a stop. Shippert escaped the incident and the heavily damaged Chevron with only a broken wrist. Adam Saal is at SaalGoodPR

58) John Hunt of the British Drag Racing Historians Association wrote in about their group. Here are some of the articles that they have on file for UK drag racers (SERIALIZED). Jerry Cookson: My first introduction to drag racing was here at Blackbushe in 1965 for one of two Drag Festivals with my dad and uncle. In fact, after a lot of convincing by my uncle, dad built his first dragster for the 1966 season; the year Santa Pod opened. Taking a keen interest in what dad was doing I started to get involved more with our local Midland club writing reports and putting together the club’s magazine and newsletters. With drag racing starting to develop at our local strip at Stratford Upon Avon’s Long Marston Airfield I soon began to get involved with the National Drag Racing Club. This soon developed into writing reports for Motoring News, NDRC News, Custom Car and UK Drag Racing magazine.
