Tragedy struck on Sunday evening in Salina, New York, as a police officer and a sheriff’s deputy lost their lives in the line of duty.
The identities of the fallen officers, one from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department and the other from the Syracuse Police Department, have not yet been disclosed, as confirmed by Onondaga County Sheriff Tobias Shelley to WSYR-TV.
The perpetrator behind this devastating incident also met his demise.
The sequence of events unfolded around 7:07 p.m. when Syracuse police officers spotted a vehicle deemed suspicious in the vicinity of Emerson Avenue and Hamilton Street. Despite their attempt to halt the vehicle, the driver evaded and fled the scene, setting off a pursuit, Fox reports.
Collaborating with Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputies, law enforcement traced the vehicle to an address on Darien Drive in Salina, following leads from its registration. All three were rushed to Upstate University Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries, leaving a community and law enforcement fraternity in mourning. The sheriff’s office conveyed condolences to the families of the fallen officers, recognizing the profound loss suffered by their colleagues.
While the investigation unfolds, the sheriff’s office assured the public of no immediate danger to the community, maintaining a secure perimeter as they awaited authorization to search the premises.
