Bill Janke, a Top Sportsman drag racer from Newburgh, NY, has passed away due to injuries sustained in an on-track incident during Sunday’s eliminations at the NHRA Division 1 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Lebanon Valley Dragstrip.

The NHRA Northeast Division released a statement Monday morning:

“The NHRA Northeast Division sends our thoughts and prayers to our racing community and the Janke Family. We ask that you all respect the family’s privacy while they work through these tough times. Keep our Lebanon Valley and NHRA first responders and track officials in your prayers as well.”

Janke’s wife, Meredith Howard Janke, shared a heartfelt message about her husband on social media:

“My husband Bill Janke, who I love with all my heart, has gone to heaven today after a horrible car crash that took his life. He absolutely loved drag racing! It was his life and passion. Please know that he loved his drag racing family! You were the world to him!”

The couple would have celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary this August.

The NHRA Northeast Division has offered support to racers, team members, and staff who may need assistance in the wake of this tragedy. Sunday’s eliminations have been postponed.

Drag Illustrated extends its deepest condolences to the Janke family, friends, and the entire drag racing community affected by this loss.
